The Early Learning Goals – Learning Through Play

The Early Years Foundation Stage is a play based framework that we use as a tool to ensure that children from birth to five years are developing and learning to their full potential.

Personal Social and Emotional Development

This is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives, and is fundamental to their cognitive development. PSED underpins their personal development and the important attachments that they will make that will shape their social world.  It helps to build strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults and peers . It aids every children to understand their  own feelings and those of others. We will help children to develop a positive sense of self, and have confidence in their own abilities. Through our practitioners modelling and guidance, they will learn how to look after their bodies, including healthy eating, and manage personal needs independently.

Communication & Language

The quantity and quality of the conversations they have with adults and peers throughout each day in a language-rich environment is crucial. By holding conversations on what children are interested in or doing allows new vocabulary to be explored. We will be Reading daily and engaging them in stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems. Through daily conversation, story-telling and role play children will share their ideas and with support and modelling from staff vocabulary and language structures will be explored!

Physical Development

This involves providing opportunities for young children to be active through gross and fine motor experiences within sensory explorations. Physical development encourages  a child’s strength, co-ordination and positional awareness to be expanded.
By creating daily opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, staff support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance and co-ordination . It explores healthy bodies and shows links to  social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control helps with hand-eye co-ordination and children develop control and confidence.

Literacy aids children to develop a life-long love of reading.  Through talk with children about the world around them, the stories they enjoy and exploring rhymes, poems and songs together language and vocabulary is extended and the adventure begins! Children explore print and begin to show understanding that print holds meaning as they explore giving they own marks meanings through drawing and emergent  writing. These skills are developed through roleplay, craft room, chalk play and recognising their own names in print! It is important to remember language development starts from birth.

We provide children with different  explorations in numbers as it is essential that all children develop the building blocks for future calculating and number solving problems . Children should be able to count confidently  and explore the patterns within numbers 1-10. Numbers are in our daily routine counting our friends, bowls and within our daily rhymes and games. Children need opportunities  to develop their
thinking skills through shape, space and measures. Through construction, height lines, games and crafts children can develop a positive attitude and interest in all things maths -looking for patterns, constructing with shapes and with a ‘have a go’ attitude

Understanding The World

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world, nature and their local community. Through learning about and  meeting important members of
our community – police officers, nurses and firefighters, children explore their own experiences and expand their knowledge.  Non-fiction stories and rhymes aid children’s
understanding of different cultures as we explore the similarities and differences. We celebrate Chinese New Year, Christmas, Poppy day and many more! . We take part in Bordon in Bloom and have our own herb garden and fairy garden to look after, as well as learning about living creatures and life cycles!

Expressive Arts & Design

Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as they share their thoughts, ideas and feelings and show pride in what they create! Every child’s developing artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. Children need opportunities to engage with the arts, allowing them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. Through our daily free flow in our craft room, roleplay and musical instruments and dance games the children learn many different ways to express themselves and create master pieces daily to bring home and share with you !
